Have a plan for what to do if you see something that worries you – you might turn the screen off or turn the device over so you can’t see it anymore. Then always go and get help from a trusted adult.

It is also good to have a plan for what to do if you see something worrying online when you are somewhere other than home, such as a friend’s house. Friends might show us things online that they find funny but we find upsetting. Be honest with your friend and ask them to stop showing you it, and if you are still worried you can leave the room and tell your friend’s parent/carer.
